A Brief History
The Delaware Colony was founded by Swedish in 1638. In 1651, it was taken over by the Dutch, and their period of possession lasted until 1664. It was then seized by the English, until the Dutch claimed the colony again in 1673. However, it was returned to England in 1674. William Penn was granted land by England (including Delaware in 1681, thus, Delaware was a part of and governed by Pennsylvania until 1703, when it became a separate colony.
